With a Sequel

The recent retirement of Sir John Tenniel. after 50 years of brilliant service on the staff of Punch, has brought to mind c ome good storiea in connection with that famous journal. A memorable gathering of Punch's staff and friends was being held at t' c old offios on tho occasion of the Prince of Wales's wedding. As the company were waiting for the procession to pass they espied Sothern, the famous comedian, who was one of the invited guests, jammed amo.ig^t the people on th« other side of the street. Owing to the tlensene»s of the crowd he couldn't move, and could only gaze up piteou«ly at Mr Punch's windows. His friends pointed to t> neighbouring policeman, and quick-witted Sothern took the hint. '" C4et mo through, constable," he whispered, " and I'll give you a so\eroign." The constable made a mcoious effort to open a way but failed. "I'm afraid it's no go, sn," he dolefully said. '"Look hero," said Sothern, determined not to be beaten, "ju-l slip your handcuff-, on me, drag me through, and I'll make it two pound'- ! "You'll find the money m my \est pocket," said he, as they stood at ilr Punch s hospitable door. But he did not notice that after the constable had taken his fee an additional bribe was slipped into the man's hand by one of the Punch men who had ionic clown to the door to welcome him, with the result that the policemen disappeared, leaving tho piince of practical jokers with the handcuffs still on, to eat his dinner as well as he could.—Cassell's Saturday Journal.
