C A NTERBURY DOING S.

By Feitz. \v e ars looking forward to th" C.J C. meeting to provide us with some interesting sport. Though the Hon. J. D. Ormond will not be represented in either of the big handicaps, the fields promise to be numerically better than those of last year, and doubtless the racing will be as good as usual. A final payment has still to be made for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps on Wednesday next, too late to be of any assistance in makmg mv selections. The course is in capital condition, and the. local hoises engaged at the meeting arc being pushed along. \> T e have bee.i favoured with delightful weather during the week, though dense fog hns occasionally completely spoiled the view of eariy-rnormng work. We are within a week 01 the meeting, and have not vet had an opportunity of looking over tly foreign horses engaged in the two principal handicaps, la the Great Easter Handicap six North Island animals have had their engagements continued. These are The Shannon, Tortulla, Melwood, Palaver, Fashion, and Osti»k. Nearly the whole of them have been handicapped for events to be decided at the Feikhng fixture on the same day, but judging by the fact that acceptances ha% c been paid and nominations made for them here it is fair to assume that they will arrive during the next few d&y3. Ihe loca' double event wagering has been of a fanly open character, Pampero. Tsaritza, and St. Denis forming the medium for speculation, the two last-named being considered well treated. No fewer than nine of the Gieat Eastei candid?tes are engaged in the Great Autumn Handicap, and it is therefore difficult to anticipate owners' intention*:. A victory m the foimer event wou'd entail the putting up of a 10lb penalty. Malatua 9 2 will piobab'y start m the Easter, and he ought to b? tomewhere about at the finish. Pampero's prospect ia the Great Autumi appeir to be better than in the shorter race under S.lO, but ha is 1 bu'liT.t hors?, and may, lam told, secure the doub'e. The Shannon 8.8 h<>s quite recently shown that she is well. This mare is bound to be dangerous, and I expect her to inn well. A= between To;tulla 8.5 and Melwood 85 1 prefer the latter whilst Benzoin 8.4, who has registered a few fair gallops of late, on'v requires to be dressed in something like his best fo-m to defeat pretty well everything m the race. Coia Lynn 8.3 is a brilliant little mare, and Glenogle 8.1, who has unfortunately had to bo stopped m hi 3 work during the past few days, v.ould make the beat of his antagonists g-liop. Skobeloft 7.13 13 fast, but his mission may be the longer race. Palaver 7.11, Hermosa 7.5. T=antza 78, Fashion 7.8, Military 73, St Den s 77, Ostiak 7.5 r Hvpnohst 6.11, and Somerled 611 all apperir. to possess wjruim? pro = peels I "hou'd not be surprised to see o. c of tho-p weighted below 8.0 piove and of the=e I am inclined to fi.-ou- T=aiitza, Hermosa, aad St. Dejus Abr-'p SO I like Tie Shannon, Glenogle, Mo'woo'i, Benroi" s.l 1 Coia L\j;n To '-■iir'ow them do-vu =t''l furthei, I would cu^ge-i fiat the winner may conn? f^oni The Sha. , on Be'Toin, Glonozle. However, tlicie a-e tv, o others ij. tlie

lace wlio«e prospect: appear to mo to be much brightei — viz.. Piimpeio and Glcnalada'e Last week, in ciitieismg vhe handicaps, I selected Ideal, Skob^'off, Cameo, Pampero, Melwood, and Gleualadale, with a preference for Pampero and Glcna'adale. The latter ha" been accomplishing some useful work, and though he has not been asked to break watches, he is well forward in his piepaiation, and this horse I fancy will just about get home. He has everything in his favour — a light weight, a boy who can ride him, and he is a big commanding three-year-old. Pampero, of couise, is bound to be dangerous, and may '.defeat Sir G. Chf ford's colt, but aftsr carefully casting up the probabilities my vote must go to GLENALADALE. Now for a few words regarding the other events to be decided at the meeting The Kildare Hurdle Race forms the opennig lace, handicaps for which appeareel on Friday niorr>lng. Social Pest 12.9 has been away from the public gaze so long that it is impossible to fairly criticise his chance, and Ilex 11.9 13 too uncertain, and I know little of the form of Hauriri 10.8. Dundee 10 2 reads well, but he is no fancy of mine. If Kohunui 10.4 comes down he may run well , but if Vulcan 9.0 and Long Tom 9.10 fence correctly they will be hard to beat. Vulcan is a wild juniper, and II not too fond of the pastime ; and though Long Tom is carrying an enlarged knee, caused by coming into contact with the timber, he is jumping nicely m his schooling work, and, anticipating little danger from Larboard Watch or Maid of the Mill (9.0 each), my vote goes lix LONG TOM. The presence of Menschikoff m the. Champagne Stakes 13 sure to cause several owners to Withdraw many of the horses. I expect to sco Air Stead's pair, Mensch:koff and Cruciform, finish in the order named. The Autumn Maiden Plate has drawn a fair field. Of the lot Sant llano, who is on ihe improve, ought to run well forward, but if Bonaparte cares to try he is 3ure to be dangerous. Somerled, Terrapin, Cavalry, St. Martm, and the hurdler Long Tom are also engaged, and if Sant llano is not leady to race the stake may go to SOMERLED. After the decision of the Great Easter Handicap the Epsom comes up for decision, and without entering fully into the handicap I shall select GLENALADALE. Entries for the Gimcrack Race have rot yet been made, so I shall pass on to the Russley Plate, for twt>-yea.r-olds. Laureate is said to be a good youngster, but Wee Dr"pp\e, Margot, Batt'ecry, and Antigone are fairly smart, and perchance ANTIGONE may win, after experiencing some opposition from Wee Diappie and Battlecry. Ihe Sockburn Handicap, which is the last event 0.1 the first day, may be annexed by FASHION or ISMENE. On the second day the only event I can touch is the Ninth Challenge Stakes, and ot present it looks a good thing for Menschikoff. -The following comparative table of the acceptances, payments, and nominations received for the C.J.C. Autumn meeting may prove interesting —

I wou'd suggest that the following horses may run well at the Plumpton meeting, which commerces on Sat-uiday nest. Acceptances are not due until to-rcoirow (Tuesday) — Maiden Handicap, Rosetta or Miss Bank ; Pony Handicap, Narragansett, Daybreak, or Rushlight; Sockbum Handicap, Honour or Nante3. Progressive Handicap, Mambrmo King 01 Moorbeam , Ladies' Bracelet, Vanchffe or Paddyfeldt, Plumpton Handicap, L&ncewcod 11, 01 Almont . Electric Handicap, Albert or Robex , Dash Handicap, Rojalwcod or The HenThe Joker, nominated from Auckland, was rot handicapped for the Plamuto'i meeting, owing to the particulais furnished rot being deemed sufficient. Capital progress i-> be.iig made with the improvements at the New Zealand Metropolitan ground. The fence aiound the tiack is nearl\ completed. The whole of the alterations will b3 finished in time for the club's M«y meeting D. The totalisator only issued 10s tickets. South Canterbury nominations are fanly good. I hear that the co-.rse- and enclosures neve* looked better.
