THE EASTER CAMP FOR MOUNTED COMPANIES. The ground selected for this camp is on Island Farm, Waikouaiti, the property pf Mr Patrick Toomey, ard situated about a-quarter of a mile from Beach street siding and a littie over a mile from Waikouaiti railway station. Camp nnangements are m the hands of Honorary Lientei ant-quartermaster Park, and are well forward. The command will be with Captain. J. C. Nicholls, of Oamaru (in the unavoidable absence of Major J. E. Hawkins), and although the Southland companies find they cannot attend, the Otago Hussars, North Otago Mounted Eifies, and Mamototo Mounted Eifies will muster fairly. The Hussars, under Captain Morris, go by road on Thursday evening. The Ao.trt Otago Mounted K.fles travel by tram and Toad, and the Mamototo by rail. The last train is timed to reach "Waikouaiti at 11.30 p.m. PORT CHALMERS N AVALS. The Port Chalmers Navals fired a 15-shofc match on Saturday under conditions that were new to most of the members. Taking a lesson from the South African war, it has been seen that to get good results a soldier must be eoi 9 than a g-ood target shot. It was arranged thai the conditions would make the competitor pc^ off his shots within a certain time, and chan.'-> the range as often as possible. The compet - tors were lying down at the ready position at 400 yards. On the targets appearing he had to fire seven shots at the target on his right, this target being turned down at the expiration of the time hunt- — viz., one minute and 45 seconds. The competitor had then to rise, go to 350 yards, and fire two shots at the left-hand target, then to 300 yards, fire two shots; then to 250 yards, fire two shots; then to 200 yards, and fire two more shots. The second target was turned down at the expiration of five minutes from the tima the first target was turned up. All shots fired at 400, 350, 300, 250 yards were from any position; at 200 yards, kneeling. Ihe targets were 3ft by 2ft, no hit 3to be marked. No verniers, wind-gauges, props, or pencil marks allowed, but the sights might be blackened. The shooting was fairly good, considering the strong north-east wind that was blowing, and that most of the competitors were noi accustomed to shooting with the V. Fj^ nry hit oa the targets counted 1 point. Appended are a few of the scores —

Mr D. A. Brodie, the New Zealand champion draughts player, came from the south. by Monday night's express to go up to Palmerston North on Wednesday morning for the 1 Championship meeting An aged couple in the Manawatu district, in applying for old-age pensions, mentioned that they were born within a month o£ each other in the same town in Prussia, and that they went to the same school as children. After marrying, the couple came out to this colony, and both were granted pensions in Palmerston North on the same day. Though New Zealand has been a great deal to the fore in England in connection with the South African war, the general idea as to the geography of the islands is delightfully vague (says the Christchurch Pres?) Superintendent Smith received a paper by the San. Fiancisco mail addressed " Superintendent Fire Brigade, Christchurch, Otago Pro\mce, N Z." When the fireworks arrived for the demonstration which took place some littlo time back, they were shipped by the English manufacturers to Poit Chalmers as, according to their letter, it was " the nearest port to CluistaluurQ];*"
