SOUTHLAND.
The proprietor of the Wyndham Farmer iva.s charged at Invercargill on the 26th ult. with a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act by publishing an advertisement inviting the public to take shares in a Melbourne art union. As the defendant withdrew the advertisement when spoken to by the police, a conviction without a fine was recorded. At Invercargill, on the 27th, James Winterbury pleaded guilty to a series of thefts, including stealing a bicycle at Timaru, money from fellow lodgers, and a cornet belonging to the Salvation Army. He elected to be dealt with summarily. As the prisoner is now out on probation for bicycle stealing at Christchurch, Mr M'Carthy, S.M. , sentenced him to two years' hard labour. At a meeting of citizens on Friday it was decided to form a Ratepayers' Association. The spell of fine weather is giving an opportunity to wind up the harvesting.
A Juvenile Smoking Suppression Society has been formed in Sydney, and will prepare a pulilic petition praying for restrictive legislation.
