NEW YEAR HONOURS.
LONDON, December 31
Knighthoods have been conferred on Mr Hiram S. Maxim (of Maxim gun fame) and Mr Henry John Miller (Speaker of the Legislative Council of New Zealand).
Grand Crosses of the Bath have been awarded to Sir Alfred Milner (Governor of Cape Colony), Lord Justice Romer (President of the Hospitals Commission), Sir Francis Mowat (Permanent Secretary of the British Treasury).
SYDNEY, January 1. Lord Hopetoun has received a cable announcing the following federal honours : —
Privy Councillors : Mr Edmund Barton, Q.C, and Sir Samuel Griffith, Chief Justice of Queensland.
G.C.M.G. : Sir John Forrest (Western Australia).
K.C.M.G.'s: Mr J. R. Dickson (Queensland), Mr William M'Millan (Sydney), Mr J. H. Symon, Q.C. (South Australia). „ Knight Bachelor: Dr J. H. Quick, of Bendigo, Victoria. [The above have all been prominent Federalists, and have sat in one or other of the Federal Conventions.}
C.M.G.'s: Mr R. R. Garran, of Sydney, who has written several works on constitutional questions and "assisted" at the conventions ; Mr E. G. Blackmore, Clerk of the South Australian Parliament.
