— According to the London Daily Express, a remaikable picture of ''The Descent from the Oro-F,'' recently discoi ercd during the lenovaiioii of the Catholic Church of St. Patrick, at Wapping, lids been pronounced by exports to be a genuine Rubens. It was found iv the porch of the church covered whh dirt and mortar, and is believed to have bf en the gitt of a pious worshipper. — Air MacWhirter, 11. A., the painter of so many r'larming seascapes oncl breezy Highland glimpssrf, was crowned by the Kcottisfi Academy Jifteau years before our own Academy mr.de him an associate, 21 years ago. lip lives in a charming house in St. J:hn's Wood, every detail of which he designed. Like Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Mr AlacWhirter is the father of two daughters, to whom he has transmitted his talents. One is a clever painter whose pictures have won general applause ; while his younger daughter is a musician and composer of considerable promise.

For genuinely original work — such, for instance, as Mr Dudley Hardy's fascinating dtisign for the "Gaiety Girl,'' or Mr Aubrey Beardsley'a stiangely attractive sketches for the Avenue Theatre and for the "Yellow Book"- high prices are paid; and Mr Hardy received from Mr Wilson Barrett £125 for the sketch design of the "Claudian'-' poster.
