CANTERBURY.
In connection with -an application from the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society to allow the taking of trout seven inches instead of nine inches in length, a letter has been received by the society " from - the Colonial Secretary promising that the maiter will receive attention, but stating that the Otagc- and Southland societies should be permitted to express their opinions before an alteration was made in the existing law A fierce southerly gale, with heavy rain, set in on Friday night. At 2 o'clock on Saturday morning the schooner Glencairn, bound from Havelock to Timaru with timber, went asLiore on the Ninetymile Beach, sixteen miles from Little River. All hands got ashore, but with difficulty. The vessel, which was of 60 tons, and owned by Mr Jackson, of Timaru, was 'broken up, and „ the beach is strewn with wreckage. Captain Watchlin is staying in the vicinity of the wreck, and the crew were taken in hy Messrs Price Brothers.
