DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF. INVERCARGILL October 1
vTeoni Topi Patuki, the leading chief in this part: of the Middle Island, died on Friday night on Ruapuke Lsland, in the Straits, "Where he had matte his home for many years. He was calculated to be at leasl- 90 years old, as his memory carried' back to prccolonisation- times. He was in the great tribal fight at Ti>turau, near 'Mataurd, arid was said to have shot {-.he invading chief, and 'so led to the' discomfiture of the -northern tribe. Topi was born ' .-at Waipati, and resided at Kaiapoi up to abou'o 1840. The old man was most friendly to Europeans, and 'his hospitality was full. On his deathbed he enjoined his sons to follow the sanne course. He and the late missionary, "the Rev. Mr Wohlers,_ were fast friends. Ruapuke ns "the bury-* ing place of other famous chiefs, and >there Topi will 'be 'interred afoout the end. of the Areek. A .large number of Maoris from the north are" expected at the tangi.
