WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this County Council "was held in the Council Chambers, Hawks■bury, oh Tuesday, 25th, at which there were present — The Chairman (Mr 0. Foote), and Crs C. Duke, A. Graham, A. S. Orbell, J. Porteous, and W. Souter.

Accounts for the month, amounting to £188 9s 2d, were passed for payment.

, The Inspector reported as under:— j Warringtqn."— SeacliS _.i-oa,&: T"hal this -scad from Crawford's towards the factory was get- ] ting considerably rutted, and required about ■ 40yds of 'metal. — Referred to the Inspector to attend to. - „ Station road, Karitanel— Portion t>f the fences along this road had been erected too close to traffic, *in reference to whi'ch_there had been several ,c*bnrplaints. There-, was" also ,a hovise., erected on the roadline at Purakanui township, and nearly across it. — The council resolved — *' TJiat the clerk, be .instructed to write to the chairman of the Karitane Domain Board, and inform him that his board having broken the terms of a letter to this 1 council of May, 1899, i (for permission to fence the road leading to the Puketeraki railway station 'at the Karitane township, and it having been repoited to this council: that the fence as erected i 3 a source of danger to traffic, the board be required to show cause before next meeting why they should not be compelled to remove the same ; that the member for the riding and the inspector visit the place and ieport fully on the condition of matters at next meeting." ,

Lower Harbour Road. — To put this road into a state of good repair would require 3000 yds of metal and 88 chains of walling, but to repair the worst portions would take 200 yds of maintenance metal and the water tables cleaned out in several places. — The inspector v/as instructed to have the water tables cleaned out and the ruts filled in.

Piyde's Road. — To improve part of the road at Hay's would require the present culvert lengthened 6ft, two chains of the embankment widened, and 40yds of metal. There were two slips on the road which were being attended to to render it fit for traffic. — The council decided to 'call for tenders for the work.

County Roads. — The water tables along the telegraph and main roads iii the Bkieskin Riding required cleaning oiit. Colehan waa making a good job in giubbing the gorse along the Main road, but T. Connell had done noth--ing towards eradicating it. — The roads in the Mefton and Hawksbury ridings leading to ihe small grazing runs in the back country required attention dining ihe next two months, and an extra man put on with the surfaceman to clean out the > water tables and fill in the mts. With regard to employing an extra man to clean* out the T\ater tables and repair the roads. — The inspectors request was granted, and in reference to the gorse the council resolved — " That" all ratepayers who have not cleared the gorse off the roads in ifront of their properties be informed Uiat the council will put a man on at their expense in terms of the act.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Mrs E. Alpine, Port Chalmers, applied for permission to fence in about 6ft of the rood at the back of her section so as to make a drain to carry off storm water flowing down hill, "which at present flooded her property. — Permission was granted to put in a covered pipe drain or culvert to the satisfaction of the inspector, but the council declined the application to erect fence.

The Receiver of Land Revenue, Dunedin, in-_ timated that the suni of £31 4s, " thirds " and *' fourths,' accrued during the -period between 2nd April and 30th June, had been paid into the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the county fund. — Received. Mr E v G-. Allen, M.H.R., Wellington, wrote in reference lo an application of the council for a grant of £100 to improve the road through the Asylum Reserve, stating that he had brought the matter under the attention of the Minister. He also wrote in reference to a grant of £200 for improvements to the Mount Cargill road, which would be considered when the Public Works Estimates were being dismissed. He also stated that he had interviewed the department re carrying gravel from Palmerston toy rail for maintenance of Main road, but was afraid the railage could not be reduced. He had seen Messrs T. Mackenzie and T. Parata, 31.1LR., to arrange an interview with the •Minister to ascertain if some special terms could not be made for the carriage of gravel ifor main roads in places where there was no suitable stone. He held out hopes that £100 for widening and extending culverts on Carey's 'Bay road would be agreed to. He also acknowledged the receipt of a resolution of the council expressing disapproval of the provisions of the Road Obstruction Prevention Bill, and while expressing his doubt as to its passing promised to strenuously oppose it if proceeded with. — Received. - Mr G. Mr W. J. Bolt, secretary Taieri Milk Supply Company, Dunedin, applied for permission to lay pipes across the Mam road from the Goodwood creamery through Mr Kennedy's land to the Pleasant River. — .Request granted " on condition that any damage arising from accident or otherwise during the laying of the pipes or leakage in the future from the pipes the company be held responsible for all damage." Mr W. Park and three other ratepayers in. the Waitati district wrote asking to have the road leadiag to their respective properties improved, which were in a very rough state. — Referred to the inspector. The Secretary Treasury, Wellington, intimated that 1 fees and fines amounting to V 2s had been remitted to the county fund at the Bank of New Zealand. — Received. Mr John White, Dunedin (instructed by Mr A. Watson, owner of section 8, block 111, Koith Harbour and Blueskin district) wrote claiming , compensation -for < road taken through ihe property referred to. — Received. Sergeant Geerin, Port Chalmers, forwarded leturri of all cattle slaughtered and fees received for month ending August, .31, 1900. — Received. The Receiver of Goldfields Revenue, Naseby, | forwarded return for half year ending June 30 j of goldfields revenue payable to the council. — • Eeceived. CONTRACTS. The" tender of William Kerr was accepted (for contract 747 (^6l ss), and that', of Allan "Allcock for contract 749 at 2s 3d per chain. DEPUTATIONS.' Mr Thomas Allcock waited on the council with a view to having some improvement effected on Thoinburn's road, when it was resolved to call 'for tenders ifor the work. The Mayor ot Hawksbury '(Mr G. Maxwell) and Cr Allcock appeared as a deputation from the Borough Council to ascertain if the Coxinty Cotraeil -would assist iru obtaining a weigli- • bridge, to be placed in' such a position that "it would ba- available for county as well as I borough ratepa3'crs. — The council resolved — I That while recognising the desirability of : having a weighbiidse they cannot cc« their way to bear any cost in connection 'therewith, as a very small portion of the ratepayers would receive any benefit therefrom."

NATIVE TOWNSHIP. Mr W. Harper was granted permission to

put a drain across the street near his house in the Native township, Karitane, same to be done to the satisfaction of the inspector* The council then adjourned.
