NOTES AND QUERIES.

Questions for reply in coming issue to be received not later than MONDAY iiigkt.

Subscriber. — Mr H. M. Davey, consulting engineer, kindly replies: — (1) As you give no reason why there should be two rows of pipes, it does not seem the most economical way to go to work. If your pipes are free from quick beads or other abstractions thp laige one would allow abouL 2<A heads to pass through it, and the small one about 11 at a good pressiire; you would- not elevate more than 26ft to 28ft with a good elevator. (2) Your largo jet would require over 5 heads and your small nozzle nearly two heads of water; the pipe would not do this and still give a good pressure, you would not elevate more than from 18ft to 20£fc when both were working. (3) If the water were properly divided — that is, not carried round sharp bends, etc., this should give about the results of No. 1 arrangement. In all cases it is wise (especially with your conditions) to have a large intake with a long tapering down to the size of the main line. You will note that though the area of the large pipe ia not quite eqiial to that of the two smaller ones, there is not so much friction, and it passes more water through it. Miner. — Mi Davey replies : — Your question is somewhat vague. It all depends 011 the conditions, the amount of water, fall, length and size of pipes, etc. If you send these particulars to us we can give definite information. Twenty Years' Subscriber. — A prisoner sentenced to six months' imprisonment each on tyro charges, the sentences to run concurrently, would only serve six months in all. If the sentences were cumulative he would serve 12 months, less allowance for good conduct in each case. Only. — Mr Davey replies: — With ycur water and fall and a good turbine you would get nearly 4-h.p., while with a wheel of the diameter you name you would get 3-h.p. A larger wheel would give you more, of course. Reader! — Mr Davey replies: — Your young man would find "Holmes on the Steam Engine," price 6s 6d posted from here, or '"The Steam Engine, Theoretical and Practical," by W. Ripper, price 11s posted, good books. If yoxi cannoi get them where you are, Braithwaite, here, has them. E. W. G-. — "Immersed" is evidently the wrong word to have used, and half a gill seems a very small quantity of turpentine for 20lb of turnip seed. We should say the idea is simply to sprinkle the turps, on to the seed, and move it about till each seed has. become impregnated with the odour. D. H., Alexandra. — We cannot give you the \ figures for the seven largest rivers of the world, but the following may be of interest, the • figures indicating the discharge per minute in oubic feet: — Mississippi 39,954,000, Ganges 12,420,000, Irrawady 4,500,000, Rhine 3,060,000, ifile 1,386,000, Molyneux 1,690,000 (Balfour) and 1,088,736 (Hector), Buller 990,879, Waikato 830,168, Thames (England), 102,000, Clyde 48,000. 0. F. 11. asks if any reader can inform him what are the names and strengths of the different parts that constitute the waterproof nuxture that the Government use on their tarppulins. lir Hoc Spero. — The magistrate has power to order the erection of a rabbit-proof fence. There has hcen no legislation on the subject this year. It is dealt with m the " Fencing Act, 1395." Mason. — No license would be required. Constant Reader.— B can distrain for his rent, can also sue for liis rent, or bring an action f>2xl turn A out of possession. F. H. Wise. — The borough council cannot lawfully expend borough lunds in the purchase of fireworks. Botanist. — I. M. I. kindly replies tc your . query: — Matipo is botanically classed as *• Mapau or Mapou. Jt is also known as Fipou, Matipow, and takes rank as Myrsmi urvillei ; Myrsinie being the old name for Myrrh. It is usually a. small erect tree, from 12i't to 20ft. The leaves are pale reddish blown, quite unlike those of any other native tree with leaves of similar shape. It is restricted io New Zealand, and is distributed over the whole length and breadth up to an altitude of 28001t from sea level. It has round black berries. The wood is of great strength, and is suited for many purposes, and also makes excellent ficewood. X. Y. Z.— (l and 2) See theatrical. (3) The account of the bank mysteiy and false burial of a lawyer named Lake, which you arc desirous ol obtaining, appeared in page 8 of the Daily Times of September 14 last. N\tive. — The following paragraph fiom " The Mining Investor's Guide," published quarterly by the Daily Times Company, supplies the information you want: — Hartley and Kiley Beach Gold Dredging Company, Limited. . . Yield to 31sl December, 1899, 96960z, value .£37,530, being an average of 18Goz a week. During 16 consecutive weeks— namely, from July 8 to October 21 — the yield was 8190oz, an average of 5210*z par week. From these 16 weeks' dredging the expenses 01 forming the company, the cost of the dredge, all outlay to the end of the year, aix< n £3 3s a shate in, (jlixi-

dends per share besides were provided for. For the half-year ended on June 30 last 44210z was the yield, a weekly average of-170oz. The yield for the week ending March 24 (1187oz 14dwt) constituted a record at the end of the half-year, but the very next week it was loweied by the Electric Company's 12340z. Shepherd. — The lest, in such oases is, Could the employee successfully bring an action for damages? That depend? upon all the siirrounding circrrnstances, and your hypothetical case docs not disclose them. No answer can therefore be given. (2) "Invercargill" would reach him. (3) You do not give sufficient particulars. "Write out a full description of the trouble, and it will be submitted to our veterinary contributor. (4) We cannot see bow any particular watchmaker could be selected for the honour, where numbers must excel. Constant Ee^deb.— The shortest and best loute would be by the mail steamers fiom San Francisco, but cargo boats would of course be cheaper. Write to Cook and Sons, tourists' agents, 95 Princes street, stating exactly what is wanted, and they will supply you with all necessary information. F.— We understand that Messrs Bell and Co received a promise before starting their match factory that the tariff would be altered by increasing the duty on matches. The Hon. Mr Ward, in introducing his amended tariff on September 13, 1895, apparently referred to this when he said: "Tho C4overiiment, or at anyrate I myself, had forgotten at the time the tariff was made up that some promises were made, and I think it is only fair that where pronijses have been made no injustice should be clone." Mr T. Mackenzie, speaking on the question, contended that the colony would lose in the first instance the £16,000 a year derived from the duty on matches. R. B.— " Hnzell's Annual" for 1805 says: — Owing to the efforts of the Russian Ambassador die Porte has been prevaiied troon to allow certain Russian warships to pass the .Losphorus in order to make a scientific examination of the bed of the sea of Marmora."
