THE BERWICK STALLIONS.
The Messrs Crossan, whose stud farm and trial tracks have turned out many profitable horses from the Berwick side of the Taieri Plain, announce that Occident and the trotting stallion George M. Patchen are at the service of breeders this season. The lastmentioned, a good-looking five-year-old byRothschild, started four times last season and won twice. At Tahuna in October he did Candidate at a difference of 17sec, covering the two miles in smin 16sec. On the same track in March he deadheated with that little wonder. Vickery (she conceding 12sec), at a mile, his time being 2min 36sec, and in the run-off George M. Patchen won by 15yds, showing a record of 2min 33 l-ssec. These are sound performances. Occident, we know, was in his day the mainstay of the Stephenson-Hazlett stable. Bred in Tasmania, of a staying family, Occident himself was one of the truest stayers -we ever^had, and this was well shown on the day "Vhen he simply Galloped his opponents to a standstill in the Duneclin Cup. He is a horse tliafc can be safely recommended.
