QUITS WITH A TRAINER

The Coolgardie Miner lias the following: '< Just prior to the Coolgardio Cup being run , a well- known jockey and trainer, who had a t horse in that race, received a telegram puiporting to come from a Boulder resident, in which he laid £630 to nil :> gainst the animal in question, the reason being that he had beeu t lucky enough to draw the horse in a svyeep. j The trainer jockey placed ihe utmost reliance ; upon the genuineness of the telegram, and { immediately wirc-d back that the offer was ac- ; cepted. Yesterday, as the result of the race | warranted, the lacing map called at the business address of the generous layer to collect the trifle of £600, but was greatly taken J aback when the Boulder man blandly ex- ! plained that it was • all a mistake, and that j he was not the lucky drawer of the horse m a sweep. It was suavely explained, however, by a bysl/mcler, that he. having seen tho acceptance of the offer, thought it was good enough to put a bit on the horse, as for once in a way he fell sure he would get a run for 1 his money. Another chipped in with a reminiscence of having made a, somewhat bimilar offer about a horse called Lc Var, which he reminded the discomfited trainer was re- J jectecl and the hor&e scratched. The trainer j murmured that he had a hazy recollection of { something of the sort occurring, when the ; other with a gloating chuckle informed him j that they were now quits. The trainer leeling that he had been had, retired disgusted.
