Imr;-roveraents — The Iloman Catholics are ?.bout to erect a brick , building for use as a , eonv, cnt, the wooden buildiag at preseit in use leaving proved to be un&uited to the purpose. '.Cenders have now been called, and as the Ca.•\holic Church is famed for the energy it puts into any work taken in hand, the new convent buildings sho aid soon be an accomplished Vcot.

Contests. — The brass band is practising as\iiditously in viev/ of the forthcoming contest it >o be held on the 16th and 17th inst., when vt is hoped it will be able to give a goo:l account of itself. " Sixpenny Readings. — During the winter Wonths ,a series of sixpenny readings has beea

given in St. John's Schoolroom under the auspices of St. John's Club. The attendance f/i these has, unfortunately, not been at all commensurate with the excellence of the cntcriaiuments. The last of the series was held on Tuesday evening, when the attendance wab ixiore satisfactory. The programme consisted of songs, recitations^ etc., given by members of the club and fnends. An efficient oichestra, under Mr H. Marryati rendered valuable Pbsistance, while a v^olm solo by Mr E. Maayatt foimed not the least enjoyable item o.i the programme

M. I. S. — The M.I.S. brought a very successful session to a close with a- social he'd in the Piesbj terian Hail on the 2oth ult. Theie was a large attendance of mernbsra and friends. An excellent pxogramine of mr online atal ana vocpl selections was submitted and met with well-merited appreciation. Two items, howeve^., deserve special mstixion o.i account Oi their excellence. The first, a series of three tableaux representing '"Britannia, '"Britannia and Zcalandia,'' and "Tho Defence of the Empire," w?s splendidly got tip. Suitable choliTßos weie Tcndcied m connection with each tableau, and the general effect was heightened b.y colcvie.l limelight benif, thrown on the figures. The wotk of arranging these tableaux wa= entrusted to Mr A. Giay, who deserves the greatest praise for their success, as do also thope who took pait vi them. Another mticliappipciat°d item was a musics I charade entitled "Tiigh Life." This was very well lendered by Misses Taylor, Johnstone, and Giay, and Mppsis G-. H. Thomson and N. L. Eeid, all of whom achieved a distinct success n their lespective prati. On the whole, the entertainment provided by the society was oii3 of the best of its kind that has been given in Milton for some time, and the society is to be congratulated on the amount of ability to be found amongst its members.
