Ashburton Cup.
The firft race at this year's meeting- was won by a real old identity in Warrington, who kept with a bunched field to the distance, and then ran out in front by himself. Hermo.«a, third, has not come on as expected, and up to date is a frost. Weasel and Mania made the running in the Pony Race till into the straight, where St. Loanda seemed to be winning, but The Queen got up in tliQ last few stride?. Suzannah was slightly a better favourite than Nihilist in the weak betting on tho Cup, and she led till well into the straight, Avhere Nihilist came at her and fairly smothered her in the last furlong. Strathnairn. was out of it airthe way. He will have to improve a great deal to have any show in the New Zealand Cup. Terrapin, voted a 'good thing for the Faiifield Plate, flattered her backers for half a mile, and then had to submit to a rather hollow defeat by Bonapa, rte, who cut out the five furlongs in lmin 4^sec. Bloomer, another very expensive disappointment, whipped round when the word was given in the Braemar Welter, and took no part in tho race. Corusa led to the end of six furlongs, and then St. Denis, with all hi? 10.9, simply raced away from her. Izal, after winning the Novel Race, was bought in at £32. In the Spring Handicap, Paladin waited on Grandshot and won as he liked. On the second day Warrington had another easy win ; St. Loanda got home in the Pony Rues after a punishing finish ; of the five runners for the Tinwald Handicap all had a turn in the lead, and the race ended in The Spinner just catching Nihili?t in time to make a dead-heat; Terrapin led all the way in tho Trial Handicap ; Huku lost a lot of ground at the start of the Coldslream Welter, but, well ridden by Brown, won by a length from Lady Medallist, Bloomer (who got away well) a bad third ; Izal was bought in at £37 aflei winning the Disposal Handicap ; and Giandshot fairly Avon the Farewell, paying £14 10s.
