RIVERSDALE.
September '24.. — We had a regular taste of winter here on Thursday, the 20th, when it snowed, lamed, and blew all day, but the snow did not lie long on the hills. The lain was l>adly wanted, and has done a lot of good. We liave gone back again to our iine weather now, and the grass is coming away fast, and the braird of the early-sown oats looks well. A lot of damage must have been done to the young lambs on Thursday last, as a great many flocks are lambing now. The roads are still very good for the time otf the year. footballers' Ball. — This was held in the Drill Hall on Friday night, 14th mst., when the ■weather proved most unkind. It had been perfect right up to the afternoon, when heavy Tain started, and continued to fall. This interfered .materially with the attendance, and there were only some 35 couples present, instead of 60 or 70, as had been fully anticipated. This is a pity, as the affair results m a loss to the club, which will have to be made good by the members. The hall was well decorated by Mr Webb, of Gore, who has good taste in such matters. The music, which was very good, was supplied by Miss Rundle (piano) and Messrs Rundle (piccolo) and Cullen (violein). Mrs Kelliher supplied the eatables and drinkables, and as us\ial, gave every satisfaction with her catering. The M.C.'s were Messrs D. Ross and R. Ferris, who proved the right men in 4he right place: Several songs were given during the evening, and the whole thing passed off well. Barring the financial failuro the ball was very successful. " Volunteering. — The application for the acceptance of a local corps has been in Mr Seddon's hands for some time now, but so far there has been no response. This seems peculiar, and certainly is not courteous to the residents. Surely " King Dick ' is not trying to punish Riversdale for having elected an opposition member! Mr Seddon, of course, is g, very busy man just now, but there are plenty of under-secretaries and clerks in the Defence Office, and the Riversdale application should at least have been acknowledged. Men who signed the petition for a corps are getting disheartened, and ( no wonder, when they are treated in this way. I suppose we may expect to get an answer soon, now that the Defence Committee have published their report. Talking of volunteers, I see that the drill hall has been repaired and painted, and looks quite spiuce again. The outside door of the officers' xooni has been shifted to the other side, s=o as to prevent the north-west wind from blowing out the lamps, etc. All the spouting has been attended to, also the windows, a new aooi step put in, and in fact the hall looks as- good as new. Mr William Currie did all the work, and did it m his usual thorough manner.
