Sir William Preece, consulting engineer to the Post Office, lias discovered a method of wireless telephony, and tiled the principle across the sea for a di&tance of eight miles. The sculling race for the championship of England, the Sportsman's Cup, and £200 a side was rowed on the Thames between George Towns and 'James Wray, both of whom are New South Wales oarsmen. The contest resulted in a victory for Towns. Wray led by two lengths for the first mile, but Towns Avas two lengths ahead at Hammersmith bridge, .eventually winning by lour lengths, in 22min 21see.
