NATIVES AND THE LICENSING LAWS.
HA WEE A, September 5. At a meeting of tho Licensing Committee the Rev. T. G. Hammond, Maori missionary, made a number of suggestions for an amendment of the licensing laws in the interests of Natives. He urged (1) the entire abolition of the right to sell liquor to Natives in wholesale 'quantities ; (2) tho appointment of Native police to as&isi the European police ; (3) the appointment of Native magistrates, to act with European magistrate?, or by themselves, in certain work under the prescribed code rules ; \4) the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire" into the wtole question of the supply of drink to Na.tives. He asked tho committee to forward the suggestions to tho Government "Avith a recommendation in their favour. The Chairman said the committee would consider the proposals.
