OBITUARY.

It is nearly 52 years since the Philip Laing left the Clyde with the first shipment of emigrants for Otago, and of those who assembled on the deck of that vessel before commencing her long journey to New Zealand anel offered up their petitions to God to guiele their "wandering footsteps," how few now remain! Mrs John Buchanan, who died at Duntroon on September 1, makes another less in their ranks. She was born in 1807. near Glasgow, and lived to see the closing months of tho expiring century. The women of our early settlers had great hardships to endure, but they faced them with heroic fortitude. To show their sturdy nature, and their willingness at all time, to lend a helping hand, a little incielent in the life of the subject of this notice is worth recording. It wao at the first great fire in Dunedin. at the corner of Walker anel Princes streets, when a number of buildings were burnt, anel the Daily Times and Witness Office suffered. A large crowd had gathered, and hundreds of men stood looking on, callous anel indifferent to tho destruction of valuable property, without offering to lend a helping hand. Mrs Buchanan and a Mrs Kodgers were so incensed at the coneluct of these men that they hurried down to the beach (which, at that time came close up to Princes street), waded into the sea, anel fifled the buckets, which were then pasßecl along from hand to hand up to Princes street, anel the water lln*own on the fire. There were no fire plugs and hydrants in those early clays. It must not be understood from this that all the men present at the fire stood idle — largo numbers worked hard, anel did all in their power to subdue the flames. Mrs Buchanan was buried besiele her husband in the Southern Cemetery on September 5.

Mr O. Olive was, on the occasion of his retiring from the firm of Struthers and Scott to go' into business at Middle-march, the recipient of a silver-mounted walking stick. His fellow-employees heartily wished him every success in the future.
