The meeting began on Friday la&t under favourable circumstances. Only two took a hand in the Marram Pony Handicap, and it could hardly be suggested that these two — Uncle Ham and Edith — were at deadly enmity in regard to the result. It was a poor race. So was the Progressive Handicap, for of the starters only

two had any soy, these being Ladysmith, who trotted at Invercargill nol long ago, and Dromedary, brought up from Gore, and capitally handled by Jim Allan. Ladysmith trotted Terr steadily, but she is not particularly fak, and was all out at the finish. The onlookers were, however, provided with -a really good contest in the Birthday Handicap. It was ons of the best races ever seen on the course. Electra. got in the lead early in the race, and just managed to last to the finish. Darby showed more pace than the mare, and would have won if a second Pringle had been available to rids him. Cling trotted in good fcrm for a mile, but in the last half the lireel, owing to the hsnvy ground. The Novel proved to be a gift to the ancient Colac, and the Tradesmen's Handicap was quite a gift to The Gossoon. Uncle Sam nearly lo3t ihe Musselbuigh Pony Handicap by trying twice to get into the boxed. The favourite, Atratos, had to fight Ruahine in the Ocean Beach Handicap, and he only just managed it. The meeting is to be continued on Saturday of this week.
