AUCKLAND.

Amongst the cargc for Sydney by the , Waihora was a large shipment of New Zea- j land flax of superior quality, which is going ■ through to Japan. It is understood the Japanese have discovered a mode of treat- ' menfc of flax which makes it of a very ■ silky character, and it is used principally < in making up " silk" goods for colonial markets. On Thursday, 17th, a young man named James Boonstra was admitted to the hospi- j tal suffering from internal injuries' caused, j it is alleged, by a kick received on the previous evening. The condition of the , patient to-day was so serious that the police authorities deemed it rdvisable to ; formally take, his depositions with respect i to the circumstances under which the in- ' jury was sustained. It was understood Constable Finnerty, who was to have left ! for Sydney last Monday to bring back a I man accused of wife desertion, has been de- i tamed in Auckland in connection with this ' case. After the depositions were taken, Constable Finnerty was arrested on a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm, j The magistrate fixed sureties, which were forthcoming, and Finner-ty was admitted to bail. Boonstra died at the hospital on Thursday night. x The noted carved house " Rauru," at Wliakarewarewa, has been lost to New Zealand, having been sold by Mr Nelson to the Ethnological' Museum at Berlin for £1600. A promise of the first offer to this museum was obtained some time ago by Dr Hilinus, a German savant, who visited Wliakarewarewa. Mr Nelson has now accepted the museum authorities' offer, ar.d the house is to be taken down and shipped to Europe. Mr Nehon will probably also go to Germany.
