THE ASSOCIATION GAME. Southern v. Wakari.

OTAGO RUGBY UNION.

The above fixture was played at Southern Park, and, after 0 very fast game, resulted in a win for the home team Toy 2 goals to 1. Wakari won the toss and deceided to plaj' against the light breeze that was blowing. Holland kicked off well down the field, but tbo ball was immediately returned by the Whiter, and play for some time continued in mid-field. Several good passing rushes were made by both f-idss, in which J. M'Millan, WiLon, Sligo, and Gillespie for the "Whites, and Fleming. Paton, Holland, and Child were prominent. The backs, however, were ploying very clclerminedly — M'Dougall, D. M'Millan, and Moore for the hill team, and Ashton, J. Kagle, and Bennett for the home team being most conspicuous. Shortly before half - time a. good rush by the. Southern forwards took the ball quickly down the field, Paton finishing with a fa&t shot from the left wing, beatinp; the Wakari goal-keeper, and (scoring first blood for the Southern. Shortly 9 after the ball was placed for the same player, who put in another good shot, scoring goal No. 2. Halftime was called shortly after without further score. On. resuming, play at once became fast and furious, the ball travelling up ati"i down at a great rate. The Southern then began to attack more strongly, Wakati, in their efforts to save conceding a couple of corners, which, though nicely put in by J. Nagle, did not increase the score. A change was now made in the Wakari team, M'Dougall coming up forward in place of J. M'Millan, and a strong attack W3S made on the Southern goal. From a gaol-kick, "Wilson returned hard into goal, the ball beating Murray before he could get back to his place, tho Southern's lead being thus reduced to 1 goal. Encouraged by this, the Whites continued the attack. D. M'Millan put in two good corners, which the Southern managed to clear, and play was onco more removed to the Whites' territory. Paton put in a fast shot, which Lothian stopped brilliantly, and time was called ■with the score : Southern ... 2 goals Wakari ... 1 goal ' NOKTHEKN V. BCSITK.

A large number of spectators visited the Northern ground to witness the encounter between the Northern and Ro&lyn, more than ordinary interest being centred in it on account of the hard tussle between these teams for the banner last season. The game was bard and willing from the start, and although tho Northern were returned the winners by 3 goals to 2 the result was in doubt until the finish. Northern won the toss, and the visitor* kicked off. Play hovered for some time about the centre until a good rush by the Roslyn forwards placed the Northern on the defensive; but good kicking by Kearney and Wyafcl succeeded in shifting the play to Roslyn territory. A good long kick by A. Dobson to S. Brown put the Northern in danger, the latter player Just missing the

post with a good hard shot. During the next quarter of an hour the ball travelled alternately from one end of the field to the other. Play was very fast, both sides making determined efforts to score. A god kicl' by Farmer sent the ball to Calder about twelve yards from the goal. The latter player slipped, and Chcdwick, following tip fast, drove the ball fast and low and scored first blood for Northern. After the kick-off Roslyn attacked, and came very near scoring. Pi. Brown sent in a good shot, which was cleverly stopped by J. Irvine, v/ho threw it out at the twenty-five y.irds flas>. A good" passing rush by the Northern forwards ended in Chaclwiek beating Cilcior and scoring again with a low hard shot. There was no further score before halftime, the ball hovering about the centre most of the time. After the commencement of the f-eeond spall, Soslya attacked strongly, and kept tho Northern backs def en dingvigorously; but excellent kicking and tackling by Wyatt, Johnston, Kearney, and Kilgour kept the goal clear until, from a scramble in front of goal, the ball was forced through with che players. The Northern attacked, and gave the Rosh-n backs a lively quarter of an hcur, but the defence of A. Dobson and Calder was splendid. Morrison at last took the ball neat]y. and made down the line, and, after beating \V. Dobson. passed to Chad wick, who in turn passed to Siedeberg, and iLat plaster, taking it neatly and quickly, sent in a swift low shot and scored third goal for the Northern. Play was now very vigorous, both fides making determined efforts to score. Dodd, by £ood play, took the ball to the Northern territory, and passed to ft. Brown, who was v/sll up, ond the latter s^m in a hard shot and scored the second gool for Roslyn. Time was then called with the score Northern ... 3 goals Ito-lyn ... 2 goab
