FORRESTER'S UPS AND DOWNS.

In an article on the man who won this year's Newmarket, "Milroy" writes: Mr William Forrester has experienced his full share of Fortune's frowns during his 30 years of active life on the turf. Had the two Melbourne Cups which he won with the brothers Gaulus and The Grafter in 1897-98 come to him in his salad days he would have shook the ring as it was never shaken before, for a bolder bettor than the burly Warwick Farmer never lived; but, when one gets such smacks as he received snore than once with horses that after running proved should have landed the pots on them, it is but human to go slow and reckon up many things before putting down the money. He backed Highborn for the Melbourne. Cup in 1890 to win £30,000, but was beaten by Carbine, who was giving the black son of -Grandmaster 531b. If this form was correct, Carbine would only have had to be well to have won the Sydney Cup of 1891, carrying 13.0 as Highborn won that race carrying 9.3. Vengeance was unquestionably a good horse, yet Highborn ran him to a head for the Australian Cup, giving him 71b. Could Carbine have given Vengeance 601b and beaten him? Hardly. Yet if Highborn's running in Carbine'? Cun be taken as correct the above poundage would not have stopped Carbine beating Vengeance; but Highborn's running was not correct- — his position lost the race, not • the horse — he was buried in the field, until they turned for home, and when the horse did come out he was ridden a weak finish. Mr Forrester was unlucky to lose, and he knew it, but he kept his knowledge to himself, and next autumn he backed the old black to win a fortune for the Australian Cup, but Vengeance barred the way by a head. Highborn won the Australian Cup in 1892, carrying 9.4-, but Mr Forrester did not back him for a shilling ; euch is the fortune of racing. In 1892 he had Ronda and Penance engaged in the Melbourne Cup, and backed both, and they ran second and third behind Glenloth in a sea of mud. In 1897 he ran first and second for the Cup with the brothers Gaukis and The Grafter, and won the following year with The Grafter. Last year he started War God and Clarion for the great race, but War God's fourth was as close as he could get. Now he begins the autumn campaign by running first and third for the Newmarket Handicap, with The Watchdog and Saraswati, two of his own breeding.
