TAPANUI.

March 7. — Harvest has commenced, and will proceed at high pressure so long as the weather continues favoxirable. There should be some good yields this season if the grain is secured in good condition, and when the reaper gets a start it is not long before the crops are safely stacked. A month's fine weather -would Oe very acceptable.

Soiree. — The Wesleyan Church annual sciiee came off on "Wednesday last, and was well £>ttended. The "Wesleyan choir from G-ove came over, and supplied a first class musical r r0 ~ gramme. The speakers were the Revs. R. J. Murray (Christchurch) and Jory (Gore), ard these gentlemen gave acceptable addressas. The church was beautifully decorated f«r the occa^ sion, and flags were- prominent' amoiigst the ferns, etc. The patriotic spirit was net waiiting, after the good news of the day, and one vocalist ~ made an appropriate selection with " Sons of the Sea." The church should benefit financially by the ro-union. Tiie £"\mday School picnic was held on Friday, and wns also favoured with fine weather.

The "War. — A large number assembled in the main street on Friday evening, and there was general rejoicing. Several tar barrels were set fire to, and a number of vocalists supplied a musical programme, the choruses to the patriotic songs being lustily taken up by the crowd. Cheers were given for all concerned in the war, whilst groans were dealt out to Kruger and the local pro-Boers, of whom the small boys burned an effigy. The collections for the fourth contingent are now pretty well over, and all parts of the district have subscribed liberally. This part will be well represented at the send-off to the contingent, and everyone that can get away will be. in Dunedin for the occasion.
