FIFTH CONTINGENT NOTES.

Auckland's section of 100 men is now complete. About 180 men. passed the medical tests. The selection was made from these. Only a few horses are yel in camp.

Lieutenant-colonel Sommerville is supervising the reception of the men for the fifth contingent, and will have charge of the Wellington camp, being assisted by Captain Dunk, of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles. During the morning applicants arrived from all parts of the province. Altogether Colonel Sommerville has aboiit 500 names on his list, from* which Wellington's 150 are to be chosen.

Messrs D. Haines and J. Forde, of Waikiwi, members of the fifth contingent, were tendered a complimentary social (says the Southland Daily News), each of them being presented with a purse of sovereigns from the residents of the district. WELLINGTON, March 12.

The camp al Newtown still presents a very lively appearance. The first' draft of men and horses — a small one — left for Dunedin^ to-day. The recruits for the fifbh contingent are being exercised in foot drill.- They are a somewhat weedy lot. It is probable that they may stay in South Africa for two, or even three, years. ,

The sergeant ol a country corps deserted from, the fifth. -contingent yesterday, and last night the sergeant of the guard vacated his post and could not be found.
