POVERTY BAY.

. .For the two- days of this meeting the machine investments came to £4552, an increa:e of £993 over last year. Norine, winner of the Makauri Handicap, is a filly by Strowan. She won pretty easily with top weight of 3.12, and was afterwards sold to Mr Hamon for £50. Paddy, the outsider, fell in trying to run round one of the corners. Argyll, top weight in tho County Stakes, was left at the post, and St. Rowan made a holy show of Lady Raven all the way. Backers scored for the third time' in succession when Tscha ran in ahead of his opponents in the Maiden Scurry. But the clever party lest their money over the old-established Turanga (Stakes. Sirocco, the half-broiher to Eurcclydon, went out a hot favourite, but he got away none 'too well, and, as a matter of fact, seemed quite unable to carry his 8.10 to the front, the upshot being that while Pinepinetekura 7.6 'won comfortably — galloping past Canopus 8.4 in the straight — Sirocco bad to finish out of a place. The time for the mile and a-quarter was 2min lSgsec, and "Pine — etc." paid £8 6s. Recent winners of this race are here shown: —

The time column in the above shows that in rthis space of 10 years the distance of Hie Tu■ranga Stakes lias varied from a mile and threequarters to a mile and a-quarter. The Tele•phone Handicap proved to be a very soft •thing for Murmur, who waited on his opponents till the straight was reached, and then 'but them down. Tenby and Chance fell in ■ the Hurdle Race, and Evening Wonder, another of the progeny of that extraordinarilyuseful sire Wonderland, got home comforl-

ably from Barbarossa, the latter being unable to concede 181b. Murmur started again in the Flat Handicap, and, giving away lots of weight, won as he liked. For the Flying Handicap backers selected Impregnable 6.7 as a godd thing, and they went down badly, the young Dreadnought failing to get--a shop. Materoa, who belongs to the lucky Torpedo^— Rivulet family, won by a length, and paid £10 17b. En Hakkore, winner of the Stewards' Handicap on the second day under the steadier of 9.0, is closely related to Mr Goodman's Transport, being by Hotchkiss out of Tasmania. Barbarossa fell in the Hurdle Race, leaving Chance to canter in. O'Neill sustained a severe shaking. Murmur, loaded with 10.0, played with hie opponents in the Flat Handidap. For the Sunderland Stakes the honour of top-weight was given •to En Hakkore, and he finished out of a place, Materoa winning comfortably. There were six starters, all believed to be so much of a muchness that the handicapper made a range of only 71b in this party. Dreyfus, a gelding by Quilt, won the Roseland Handicap all the way. Random Shot made the pace in the Maiden Scurry, but was knocked otjt on the point of staying by Haati Puru, a son of Wakatipu. Argyll won the Publicans' Purse by only a head from Norine, and the programme wound up with a good go in the Forced Handicap, Canopus (by Castor — Antelope) beating Murmur" at level weight?, but -mly by a length, all out.
