TAHUNA TROTS.
Knowing by half a lifetime's experience* that owners as a class make a point of girding at handicappers, I fully expected to hear Mr Dowses handicaps for the Tahuna »_ eeting assailed with all sorts of reproaches and criticisms either of a general natu.-ej such aa " I don't like the look of the handicap " or of the more pointed character, as, for instance, " Sucn-and-sueh's horse has na chance." As a rule, ohe hears the general criticism when owners are in each other's company, and the pointed criticwm when they are alone with the newspaper man. I have got thoroughly used to it all. It makeg no impression upon me now. But for oncaf in a way there is "no growling this time, so far, at any rate, as the Tahuna 'Cup (saddle) and the Anniversary Handicap (harness) are concerned. Mr Dowse has by general consent brought the horses together nicely. This, of course, is no more <?han might have been expected of him. The candidates in each race are all fairly well known on public form. Taking first the Anniversary Handicap, the following table shows the records (calculated oj actual) alongside the handicaps: —
It seems to-me that this is a good handicap. Vickei'y, the crack pony, has a fair show, and I rather prefer her to anything about the head^ of the handicap, while of the rearmost lot rtimu and Maggie S. are perhaps most capable of improvement. As to the Tahuna Cup (saddle), the records and handicaps stand thus: —
Cling made her 1 record at 'Shristehurch on Boxing Day, winning by 80 yards--, and I cannot see her out of it this time ; but, for choice, would rather take Dictator, Harold, or Plan,' these being my first picks in a pretly well-matched lot.
