UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Olago University Council was held in the Education Board Offices on Monday afternoon, when there were present — Messrs E. B. Cargill (vice-chancel-lor), G. G. Russell, J. Allen, M.H.R., and D. White, Rev. Mr Cameron, and Drs Burns and Hocken.
The Finance Committee reported having passed accounts for payment amounting to £577 4s lOd ; that the first moiety of the Go.vernment grant to the School of Mines (£250) had been received. — Adopted. • The Mining School Committee .reported having held a meeting to consider the 13 applications for the position of lecturer, assayer, etc., at the School of Mines, and stibmitted the following names~for the-considera-tion of the council: — Messrs B. F. Allen, M.A., B.Sc, P. G. Morgan, M.A., and D. B. Waters. — On the motion of Mr Allen, Mr Waters was appointed. The same committee reported that two applications had been recsived for the post of lecturer on applied mechanics — viz., John Duncan, B.Sc, and J. E. L. Cull, who has classes. — The council appointed Mr Cull, though, owing to the ability of both applicants, considerable difficulty was experienced in coming to a decision. A communication waF received from the Olago Institute stating that the Government had given permission to a scientific man to accompany, free of cost, a fully-equipped ' trawling expedition in a vessel fitted with nets and apparatus suitable for scientific observation, as well as for the commercial purposes of the Fisheries department. The inspector of fisheries had suggested that Mr Hamilton j should avail himself of this permission. — The council expressed their desire that Mr Hamilton should go, and hoped he would be able [ to make arrangements accordingly.
A letter was received from the Dunedin Hospital authorities enclosing the estimates and plan for a new morgue, and asking what amount the University Council would be prepared to subscribe towards its cost. — It was resolved lo offer the hospital authorities the sum of £100, payable in two instalments of £50 each.
