THE PLAGUE.
SYDNEY, February 27; The man Makins, the second plague vi<> tim, is dead. ! February 28. Since the last report from Npumea there have been 15 deaths from the plague. March 2. ] A man named Walker, living at Annandale, has been quarantined. He is supposed to be suffering from the plague. A mar. named Madden was found to be suffering from the plague. All the cases have been traced to Sussex street. March 4. The Hunter River Hotel, where Madden, the last plague victim, was found, has been declared infected. Thirteen persons, including Sandys, Eus soil, and Curran (stewards of the Mararoaj and Hurst (steward of the Monowai) havt been removed to quarantine. | Cremation of the bodies of the victims ii suggested. March S. Madden, who was suffering from the plague, is dead. . l '■ BRISBANE, March 2. Sydney has been declared a plague* 1 infected port. NOUMEA, March 3. One or two cases of 'plague are reported ' j daily. Among the kanakas these cases are i mostly fatal.. Several Europeans have also died during the week, j March 5. M. Charboneau, a member of the local Parliament and Municipal Council, died i of the plague this morning. Deceased was j a member of the Sanitary Commission, and j was a victim to duty. A white woman ' also died yesterday. A few more cases are • reported. I WELLINGTON, February 28. I The local office of the Union Steam Ship Company has received a cable message from J Sydney stating that stringent methods are '" being adopted to prevent plague germs reaching anjr of their steamers when at that port. The wharf and sheds are being , thoroughly cleansed and disinfected, and an active crusade against rats is being prosecuted. To prevent vermin crawling I up the mooring lines or cables by which ! vessels are held to the wharf special rat traps are being fitted thereon. With these and other .measures being taken rats will find it a very difficult task to obtain a passage across. j M • j With reference to the placing in quarantine j of the stewards of the Monowai and Mararoa, as reported in yesterday's cablegrams, information has been received that these gentlej men, with others, called at the hotel where j the plague victim was found, and the health officers arriving aiad finding them in the houas ordered all present to be quarantined.
