In Germany a tramp is called a " chaussiergrabentapezierer." The Germans are a hard-working people.

Mr Alexander M'Kay, Government geologist, has now collected about 3000 rock samples of the Cape Colville Peninsula. All the samples will be submitted to an expert at Home to be classified according to their true character and nomenclature. The samples are being taken in duplicate or more, so that when they return a complete Fet should be available for the local School of Mines.

In his efforts to keep in the van of civilisation the Maori has confusing ideas of the meaning of certain English words. The other day an elderly Native entered a New Plymouth hotel and asked for a quart of beer. The landlady demurred about supplying him, and openly hinted that the drink was for " the missus." The idea was indignantly r-couted by the Native, who emphasised his denial with the remark that he had no wife ; that he was, in fact, a teetotaller. The man's relative value of the words "widower" and " tee to caller " is interesting.
