IN MEMORY OF SERGEANT SAMUEL GOUBLEY.
Who fell with Trooper Connell in the gallant charge at Kendsburg, South Africa, January 15, 1900. Bury the boys together — together they femght so well, Boy& of the hill and heather — together like men they fell! Fought for our land like heroes — never their name will die, V/hile under the sun and under the stars their Xnecious dust shall lie. Sisters! weeping for thy brothel, When thy tears be spent and over, When victory o'er grief be won, Hear an Empire say, "Well done!"
'Tis with throes like thine she buys Energy for high emprise, And sends her heroes to the skies — Grudge her not thy tears and sighs.
Father! raise thy hoary head, Where he fought and nobly bled, See a glorious halo shed Koiifld him dying — round him dead.
Hound him as he scaled the wall, Round him in his funeral pall, " Father — sisters — dear ones allRejoice — I heard the bugle call."
Comrades, who his glory share, Peril with him nobly dare, And with heads all bowed and bare, To his grave together fare.
Meeting there another band Bearing one who, hand in hand Made with him that gallant stand For Queen and Empire, home and land
There upon the grassy veldt, These true warriors meekly knelt — • For Briton brave and sturdy Celt Bear the hearts that soonest melt.
" Our Father," — soothing prayer— « " Gracious Heaven to thy care, Of these caskets be Thou ware, The gems are with Thee, garnered there." They buried the boys together — out on the veldt 30 wide, Sons of the hill and the heather, they buried them side by side. There in the grave of heroes, never their name will die, While under the sun and under the stars their precious dust shall lie. -JOYCE JOCELYN, fiarltoßi Gore road, February 25.
