THE CAPE DUTCH.
A resident in Auckland sends to the Auckland Herald an extract from the letter of a. gentleman who has lately gone to Africa from New South Wales, showing the feeling of the Dutch population in Cape Colony. The writer of the letter says:— "The British soldiers are fine fellows, and they can't do enough for \is. There are a lot of Boer prisoners here, and they have plenty of sympathisers among; the Dutch colonials, and when- these Dutch get a chanc9 they let us know it. In fact, a crowd of them set upon a Grenadier Guardsman and nearly killed him ; he is so much knocked about that ha has pone out of his mind. Last night a lot , of us were on leave, and coming home we met several of these Dutch Boern. Theysaw that vse were Australians, and started to insult us. Y/e stood it for some time, until one of themsaid that he would fight any soldier in South Africa, and that the Australians were not worth feeding. I downed him at once, and the other chaps that were with me. took on the rest, and. I think that we satisfied them, in less time than it takes to writo this that the Australians were a trifle ahead of them. No doubt it will shock you to hear that we were mixed up in such a row, but, you see, a man can't stand too much." The gentleman who sends the letter remarks: — "I am not at all shocked, and most of your readers will be glad to hear that my correspondent was born in the Auckland province, ajid paly, leffc for Sydney about five yeavs ago..^
