BALCLUTHA HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SHOW.
I The Balclutha Horticultural and Industrial ' Exhibit Society opened their first annual combined exhibition on Thursday. The horticultural portion of the exhibition was held in M'Kenzie's Hall, and the industrial in Messrs "Wilson, | Mackay, and Cos. auction mart. In the show ' of horticultural products there was a marked i falling off compared to former years, and the j backwardness of the season made its effects ■ plainly evident in many of the classes. The pot plants section particularly was very weak, but the show of cut flowers was, on the other hand, surprisingly good, and some really fine • specimens were exhibited. There was also some I good exhibits in fruit and vegetables, but the , competition on the whole was poor. The industrial portion of the exhibition was very good, and the competition in most of the classes well sustained. In the industrial and fine art department some of the work was really good, not to say superior. Strange to say there were no entries m the farm produce section, wlaile that in dairy produce was well up -to the mark. The , competition for juveniles was not decided when the train left for town, while the vocal and instrumental competitions will not be decided till to-day.
