PRINCE ARTHUR DREDGING COMPANY.

i ' " -TO THE EDITOR. Sia,—l noticed; in your issue of the 14th, a letter over the signature of a correspondent signing himself " Pro Bono Publico," who is astonished at the way old abandoned claims of the last boom are resurrected with a new name and an up-to-date dredge, and makes, special mention of the Prince Arthur, on the Shotover, as one of those. Does " Pro Bono Publico " know that there are many claims on the Shotover that have been abandoned for years, and been .worked afterwards with splendid results. Perhaps your correspondent will allow me to know a little about the Prince Arthur, as I have teen mining 'on the Shotover for years. This claim. I consider to be one of the best dredging claims on the river, as it is all maidexi ground. There certainly was a dredge on it a few years past, but, like all the old wining machinery, it was out of date, jmd the consequence was that it could not bottom, the ladders, buckets, etc.,, being too small. This being bo, the dredge was removed. I strongly advise all who have taken u» snares in the Prince Arthur to stick to them, and take >HO notice of any person's warnings. —I am. etc., , , , ; J. J. Lynch. Arthur's Point, February 16. TO THE EDITOB* Sib,—l did not see the letter mitten by Pro Bono Publico/' to which Mr J. T. Lynch replied, in your paper of to-day, referring to a claim called the Prince Arthur, situated" in the canyon, just above Arthur's Bar.' _ Mr "Lynch- is wrong.' ThY small dredge he mentions was on Sutherland's" Bar, above the .canyon, 'and consequently above the ground »qw claimed by the Prince Arthur Company, and' was abandoned not because the machinery could not bottom, but because the bottom was boo near the surface, and when they disturbed' j fch'e- stones and big rocks the current was so swift that any gravel or loose stuff, including gold and black sand, was swept down through the canyon, on to Arthur's Bar. I speak positively, as I know the ground well, and had all the particulars from the owner of the small dredge referred to.—s am, etc., W. D. S. February 21.
