OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

The regular monthly meeting of the^ School Commissionersot Otago was held on the-^.9th, and was attended by Messrs J. P. Maitlancl (chairman), A. Baldey, T. Mac Gibbon, W. Dal- . las, and J. Borrie.

Mr Borrie reported on section 23, block V, Maerewhenua district, containing 1473 acres. In terms of Mr Borrie's report it was decided to subdivide the section into two or three divi-* • sions, and offer them, for lcaae at an" upset of ,4s 6d per acre. „, The Secretary reported that the following offers had been accepted for lease of reserves on the 29fch ult. : —Section 13 and 14, block I, Kauroo, J. H. Fenwick, 3s 3d per acre ; section 5, block X, K. J. Reid, 6d per acre; section 8, block X, Balclutka township, J. Allan, 30s per annum; section 19, block X, Clyde, G. Fache, 20s per annum; section 3, block XVII, Waihola township, J. H. Smith., 15s per annum ; and section 15, block 11, Warepa, Murray, Roberts, and Co., 3d per acre. The Seeretaiy recommended that sections 6, block VI, Glenornaru; 14, block 111, Warepa; and 3, block 111, Rankleburn, be offered for lease by auction in April next. — Approved. A letter was received from the Under-secre-tary for ""Lands stating that the Minister decline.d to submit the proclamation to the Governor enabling G. B. Styles to purchase the freehold of section 8, block VIII, Wendon, held on perpetual lease from the Southland Land Board. — Received. A. D. Macgregor applied for -a right to mine for coal on section 12, block X, Waikaia. — Adjourned for a month for further information. James Carrnichael applied for the right to mine for coal on section 3, block XI, Wendon. — Referred to Mt M'Donald, the Southland agent, for report. Mr M'Donald, in his monthly report, forwarded an application from Jno. Busbridge for permission to raise lignite on his section 5, block XVIII, Wendon, and suggested that the same be granted on payment ot £5 per annum, half-yearly in advance. — The right to raise lignite was granted in the terms suggested. Mr M'Donald also forwarded an application from the executor in the estate of the late Jno. Howe, for consent to a transfer of the lease of section 2, block X, Wendon, to Robert Hunter. — Agreed to. — Mr M'Donald also forwarded an application from the agent for the Public Trustee in the estate of the late J. P. Hill, for permission to transfer the interest in a coal pit on Waikaia Run, to Mrs H. M'lvor, sen. — Agreed to. — Mr M'Donald also reported on a number of reserves in Wendon, Inv;ercargill, Jacob's River, Wyndham, Toi Toi, and Campbelltown districts, the leases of which shortly expire. — The report was received, and Mr M'Donald authorised to advertise the land for lease early in April.

Accounts amounting to £25 6s 6d were passed for payment.
