T'lis wps trip jiico pr ; oe paid by Ar.'irctic in the B"own Bill Handicap at Adelaide on the 3rd inst. in a field of 17. Antarctic is a tix-year-old gelding by Caramul oul of Ocean. Prior to this race he had ptarled 30 times, and won once only. Sam Ferry, tho trainer, and the owner of the horse held nearly half tho imchinp money between thorn. When Ferry got Antarctic to train, the horse was quite lame, " Tarqnin " tolls us, and racing men never troubled their heads about him -».rxsr more. Very few even knew thai the
Caranmt gelding was in the race, and those who did never gave him a second thought. And yet his victory Mas gained on its merits, as the six furlongs were run in lmin 16.=gc, and, so far as is known, neither Trochon nor Sparta, who filled the place?, was interfered with by the acoident lo Burnside, who fell and broke his leg. Air Ferry believes in inspiring his lods with confidence. Before young Darroeh left the paddock on Antarctic he was told by his employer that ihis was the beot thing he ever had in his life. Pie was to keep a place on the rails, and never leave them, and he could, not lose. Darroeh did not come on the rails, but he ivon all the name. Another interesting race on the same day was the Richmond Park Stakes, a handicap for two-year-olds. It saw another two-year-old to the front who had not previously scored. Eieh of the young events in South Australia since August 1 has fallen to a different candidate. Royal Artillery, the winner on this occasion, is by Light Artillery from Lady Doris-. He has grown into a nice coll. and there wa» no mistaking the way in which ho cut down Oxygen and Nita Carlyon at the finish. When lie ran in the Fulham Park Plate he certainly did not impress the crowd, but sinco then he has improved out of all knowledge. Hodgkins, who had his choice, had agreed to ride Carl in the Richmond Park Stakes, but the Lady Doris colt shaped so well in a two-furlong spin that he changed his mind, and fortunately got. on to Royal Artillery. Lady Doris, the darn of the winner, was br^d at Morphettvillo, and only cost Mr Allen 35gp. When he got her she was very lame, suffering from an injury to her shoulder, but she ha» thrown this all off. and is in great heart. Lady Bountiful and BortYbastes, two of her progeny, weiv no good, but Dirk Hammerhand gained fame for her, and Royal Artillery may assist to perpetuate it. She has a chestnut foal by Carlyon, and has been stinted to him again.
