VOLUNTEERS.
■FIRST BATTALION OTAGO RIFLE
VOLUNTEERS. The usual monthly^ parade of the town corps of this battalion was held on Monday, 12th, i *tho men zmisteiing at the Garrison Hall. The ' battalion, headed by the Garrison Band, was then marched to the old Asylum ground, where battalion movements and outpost work were taken up. The work was very satisfactory, and about half-past 9 o'clock the battalion was marched back to the hall, where Major Smith presented the Ladies' Challenge Shield to the winning team (Dtlnedin City Guards). It has been decided that an Easter camp is to be held this year, and the men will lemain in camp for a week. Instructions were given to captains of companies to make a special effort to get employers to allow their men to attend this camp, and, as things are at present, it is not anticipated that any employer will refuse to allow volunteers to take advantage of this | chance to make themselves as efficient as pos- , sible. Major Smith was in charge of the paiade, and had with him Captain Myers as acting junior major, Captain Hislop as adjutant, I and Sergeant-major M'Callum and Quartef- { master Sergeant Moncrieff. The parade slate was as follows: — Lieutenant - commanding i Waters, Lieutenants Dodda and Chxu chill, 2 | chief petty-officers, 3 fiist-class petty-officers, j 4 second class, and 68 gunners. The company I was exercised in the various movements, and in j firing exercise by the officers. A minute inspection of arms and equipments was made by the colonel commandant, who expressed his satisfaction at the perfect state in which the I company appeared on parade. He stated, in addressing the men, that he felt proud in having I such a company in his district, and complimented the members on the large proportion I they had sent to represent them in the Trans- , vaal. No le&s than 14 reciuits applied for admission, and weie presented for Colonel Webb's j appioval. Being a suitable class of young men, I the colonel-commandant recommerded their acJ ceptance, and addressing them, said he hoped they would do all m their power to keep up the high reputation of the company. There is a strong feeling throughout the ' Peninsula that a volunteer company should be i formed. One gentleman waited upon Mr J. > White on the subject, and said that if he would take the matter in hand the lesidents would guarantee that 100 men would join, either for a mounted infantry or an infantry corps. Mr White did not decide as to what he would do. The result of the final examination in Sub1 marine Mining and Gunnery of the Port Chalmers Naval Artillery is that the under-men-tioned petty-officers and men have been success- ! fill, and are entitled to the extra £1 capitation, a silvei badge, and certificate.
