AUCKLAND

The death is announced of Captain Frederick Armstrong, formerly of H.M. 14th Regiment ; aged 70. He served in the Crimean War, was wounded at Sebastopol, and fought in the Taranaki and Waikato War with his regiment for many years. He lived at the Thames, and latterly at Devonport.

The Government veterinary, Mr Gilruth, is in Rotorua investigating the " hoof disease," which affects horses and cattle in the district.

The rateable value of the city of Auckland is returned by the city valuer at £332,256, an increase of £15,545.

At a- meeting of the W.C.T.U. Convention a letter was read from Lady Henry Somerset stating that the World's Union would bo well represented at the Paris Exhibition, and inviting subscriptions for the distribution of millions of temperance leaflets at the kiosks. A subscription was raised among members. The greater portion of the day was occupied in reading the various departmental reports and discussing them. An interesting report was lead by Mrs J. Foley, licensed Maori interpreter, on the work of the societ}' among the Maoris. A resolution was carried in favour of legislation prohibiting the sale of tobacco and cigarettes to children. The convention is expected to close to-morrow.
