FATAL RESULTS OF A ROW. GREYMOUTH, February 17.

This morning about 1.3 C a row occurred at the Union Hotel over a game of dice, felix men were p'ayin", and it appears the disputants were P. Carcw and W. jlaitin. They called each others liars, and then adjourned to the street to settle the mattei with iliei.- fist.-. Both were the worse foi Jjquor, though not helplessly drunk. Caiew afterward* went out oi the hotel, feeling unwell., and as he did not return within half an hour his inatos went i to look for him. They found him in an unconscious condition a couple of hundred yards away. He was prostrate on the footpath. Medical aid was imm' dLUely sent for, but Carew did not regain coii.-.tionsnef.s, and died about- 9 o'clock. He is a single man, a miner, and k native of Ireland, aged about 30. At the inquest to-day the medical evidence was to the effect' that death was caused through a fracture of the | skull, but it was improbable; that it could , Tiave been due to a blow from the fist. It ' was likely that the fracture took place through deceased.- head coming in contact with the pavement or atones on the road. The jury, after hearing evidence all day. , returned a verdict that the " deceased met his death through a fracture of the rfaill, j but there was not sufficient evidence to say | what was the caiue." The police arrested Martin, .and charged him with murder. After the inquest he was admitted to baii in two sureties of £50 and himself in £100. j The case comes on again on Tuesday.
