Mr J. J. Glynn, of Hyde, New South Wales, writes us again respecting his comi:>eting problem m the Sun Tournej, which had been called in question. He informs us that our surmise was correct that he had not seen the conditions, but had been misled concerning them. Mr Glynn states that ho was told by Mr Haekett, another well-known Aiistralian composer, that the conditions did not require problems to be hitherto unpublished. Mr Hackett obtained his information fiom the Field, which, apparently, gave an incomplete summary of the rules, omitting that which, as we have x^ointed out, says, " The competition is one for original and unpublished three and two move problems." To be on the safe side, however, Mr Glynn, when forwarding his solution, took the precaution to mention that his problem had been previously published. These circumstances, and the fact that his problem first appeared in the Brisbane Week in the seventies, which is, we believe, long prior to the publication of the similar problem of Dr Tolosa Carreras, not only dispose of the charge of plagiarism, but fully establish Mr Glynn's good faith in every respect.
The election of officers in the New South. Wales Chess Association for the coming year resulted as follows: — President, Dr Hodgson; vice-presidents, Mr Pulsford, M.L.C., Rev. Oakes (Bathurst), Mr Crakanthorp (Waggo), Dr Nash, and Mr C. E. Turner ; honorary treasurer, Mr Speeding ; honorary secretary, Mr Sorninerhoff. Mr 11. A. Britten, the retiring honorary secretary, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services. The successful result of the first intercolonial match played under the association is regarded as matter for congratulation. Two tourneys are in progress at the British Chess Clvb — one a handicap tourney, in which there are 16 competitors ; the other an even tourney, in two rounds, in which the players, all of the first class, are E. O. Jones, Mortimer, Reeves, "VVainwright, and Ward-Higgs. — Canterbury Times.
