February 12. — The Rev. Mr Miller is a£ picBent absent on a month's holidays. The Rev Mr Pryor is filling his place in the meantime with much acceptance.

Rough Riders. — 1 understand that seven 1 young men from this district have volunteered for the fourth contingent, some of whom are providing their own horses and equipment. So far, however, arrangements have not sufficiently advanced to enable me to give the names of any who have been accepted. Obituary. — Aroihei old identity has passed away in the person of Mrs Thow, relict of the late Mr Robt. Thow. Deceased ws>s found dead in her bed on Friday morning last, death having apparently taken place but a short time previously. An an inquest held on Saturday a verdict was returned, in accordance with the medical evidence, that death was due to failure of the heart's action. Mrs Thow was of a very quiet and retiring disposition, but those who knew her could appreciate the genuine kindliness of her nature. Horses for the "War. — The vicinity of the railway station presented quite an animated appearance on Monday forenoon, when Messrs Drthie and Gow arrived by the 10 o'clock train to inspect and purchase horses for the fourth contingent. About a dozen horses were paraded before them and put through their facings, and so expeditiously did the buyers Jo their work that they were able to complete the purchase, subject to veterinary inspection, of three horses before continuing their journey by the express 20 minutes later. Fourth Contingent Schemes. — Arrangements for the local schemes in aid of the fourth contingent fund have been announced. On Wednesday a large sports meeting is to be held. The events will be largely in the way of novelties, which, if they are not of a character to permit of record breaking being indulged in, are at any rate calculated to give the spectators any arrcunt of amusement for their money. Side shows have also been ananged, the ladies are to have a tea kiosk on the ground and in conjunction with the sports a flower show is to be held. In the evening a concert is adveitiscd winch is sure to be largely attended. It is expected that these schemes will pretty well drain away any loose cash that may have gatheied sir.cc collecting for the patriotic fund stopped. If not, other means towards that end will no doicbt quickly be devised.
