MAYORAL ELECTION.
The election for the office of Mayor for the City of Dunedin took place on the 29th, and excited a considerable amount of interest. From a comparatively early hour the principal polling booth at the Town Hall was very busy, and towards the end of the afternoon thi crowds that came pouring in to register their votes were so great that numbers had to be sent away by the candidates to record their votes elsewhere, and the four polling booths provided did not appear to be adequate for the requirements of the larger roll, consequent upon the extended franchise. This was the first election held under the 1 new franchise, and the result of the advantage taken of the extension was .that the roll contained 6044 names, as against 2300 on the roll for last year. 1 It was about half-coat 7 sbeii the Returning
Officer (Mr Wilson) appeared on the steps -ol the Town Hall, and announced the following v result of the day's polling: — R. Chisholm ... ... ... 2430 , .. W. Swan 1218 The majority thus scored by Mr Chi short! is 1212.
