Betting: Evens on Newhaven 11, 6 to 5 against Merman, 10 to 1 King's Messenger. At a slow pace Kiug's Messenger, some four lengths in advance of Merman, showed the way, with Newhaven II three lengths away, waiting. So they raced out of the straight, and no change took place imtil a-inile from home, where Mertnan closed with King's Messenger, and shortly afterwards heading him entered the straight with a clear lead. Soon afterwards Newhaven II took second place, only to give way again at the distance to King's Messenger, but the latter failed to reach Merman, who won by two lengths; a head between second and third.
