RACING IN SEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING. ; First Dat — Wednesday July 19.

The Wellington Racing Club had an un- 1 fortunate experience as regarflg weather for , the opening day of the Winter meeting. The • previous night's rain had made the course ' very heavy, and the lawn and saddling paddock were converted into a sea of mud. To make matters worse a cold southerly wind, • accompanied by drizzling rain, blew through- '. out the whole day. Considering the state of the weather the attendance was good, the ■ Governor and party being among those present. The state of the ground militated against the racing, which, in most cases, was of a runaway character, and the results could ' not be taken as the true form of competitors. Shylock had a comparatively easy win in, the big event, for which Marina was the popular fancy. He made the running from, the start, and came right away from his -field when heads turned for home, thus proving that his form in the Great Northern Grand National Hurdles was no fluke. In the Parliamentary Handicap Strathnaim was made a hot favourite, but he was never in the hunt, aud finished last. •In the three last events the horses could not be distinguished for the' greater part of the distance owing to the misty rain. The sum of £6473 was put through. - the tote, as compared with £5472 on the first ' day of the Winter meeting last year. fie--suits: — MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE, Of SOsovs; second horse lOsovs. About tws ~ miles. 167— Mr T. The weather was fine overhead, but the •course and ground were still in a fearfully heavy and sloppy state. Morag, the winner of the big ■ Steeplechase, ran and jumped wefl, and held -«. prominent position throughout, but Nor'West came well towards the finish, and Morag had to be kept moving to get home in front. It was a capital finish, there being little more ""than a length between the three placed horses. The sum of £7676 was put through the totalizator, as compared with £7100 on the second •day of the Winter meeting last year, — total /for the meeting £14-,14-9, as against £12,572 yast year.
