The Bank of England returns show the reserve to be £20,947,000, the proportion of reserve to liabilities being 42.80. The stock of gold, coin, and bullion is £30,932,000 ; notes in circulation total £28,672,000; public deposits, £8,302,000; other deposits, £40,420,000; Government securities, £13,089,000; other securities, £32,857,000. Three months' bills are discounted at 3£ per cent. Consols, £107. Quotations for colonial Government stocks are subjoined, compared with those ruling, at the close of last week: —

.The excessive heat is depressing the wheat markets, and but little business is doing. Australian cargoes now due are quoted at 295 ; May and June shipments, 29s 6d. Two thousand quarters of South Australian July and August shipments sold for 31s. Metal Markets. — Copper (quiet) : Spot, £76 ss; three months, £76 15s. Tin (firm): Spot, £128 17s 6d ; three months, £130, Lead, £14 10s; spelter, £25 15s. Silver, 27fd per ounce. Sugar (dull) : Java, 12s 9d ; German, 10s 6d. The Bradford wool market is very quiet. Common sixties, 25'jrd ; supers, 27£ d. July 22. Frozen Meat. — Mutton: Crossbred wethers and maiden ewes — Canterbury, 3£d ; Dunedin and Southland, 3^d ; North Island, 2|d.
