BREEZE OF MORNING.

Breeze of the morning, with gladness we greet thee, Rousing us up to the 'labours of day, Bringing bright promise of 'freshness and vigour, Sweeping the cobwebs of slumber away. Flinging far from thee the curtains of darkness, Hastening the lingering footsteps of night. Hustling and bustling the birds of the wild wood As they warble their first drowsy welcome to light; Bidding them hail the approach of the dawn king With carol and chorus, with matin and glee; Ruffling in mischief the brow of the streamlet, Shaking the dead leaves from hedgerow ancl tree. . Breeze of the morning, our song-birds grow weary, The stream of our lives hath its silence and shade, Our hearts have their dead leaves — sweet promises blighted, Bright hopes that wither, and pleasures that fade. Come into our spirits as into the forest, Call forth the voices of courage and prayer, Ripple the waters, and scatter the dead leaves, And shake the dry dust from the green #nd the fair. LILIAN. K'arrandera (N.S.W.), July, 1898.
