AUCKLAND. ' Mr Cheeseman, of the Auckland Museum, was a passenger by the Ovalau to make a botanical survey of Rarotonga and a collection for the Kew Herbarium.
.A legacy jof £400 has come to the Auck : land Hospital and Charitable Aid Board through the- death of a widow, Mrs Ann Gamble, living in the Costley Home. She had some property which she made over to the board in trust for her use during her lifetime, the balance after death to go to the Costley Home. j
At the railway crossing on the 10th a horse with a loaded dray jibbed. The signal station signalled an incoming train, which^ whistled "Down brakes.' Although the speed was lessened the engine smashed the dray to pieces and the horse had to be destroyed. The driver (Arthur Andrews) escaped uninjured.
Proposals for increased wharfage accommodation, shedding, dredging, etc., involving £80,000 are to be submitted to the Harbour Board.
A man named Moorcroft has been missing from Coromandel since the 7th. It is feared he has been lost in the bush.
Mr Hutchinson, one of the passengers by the Alameda, volunteered for Rooseveldt's rough riders and was engaged in the battle of Manila.
