OBITUARY.

WM. PARKER STREET.

It is with regret that we have to record the death of another old Dunedin notability in tho person of Mr Win. Parker Street, who passed away on Tuesday last at Albany, Western Australia. • Mr Street came here from Victoria at the beginning of the sixties while yet a mere lad. After experiencing Bomo of the vicissitudes common to many in those days, ho received the appointment of clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court and Registrar of Births and Deaths in this cityr This position he filled with credit for someyears, but he eventually resigned it for the purpose of entering into business on his own account. The deceased always took a keen interest in public, matters, and waß no laggard in tho matter of serving his fellow-citizens. Beside 3 being a prominent member of the 1.0.0. F., he at different times served as chairman of the City School Committee, and as a city councillor, and as mayor of Dunedin. He entered municipal life in 1877, when with Mr Sydney James ho was elected auditor for the city, and, being re-elected the following year, he held the office until June, 1879. In August, 1880, he was returned as councillor for High Ward, and was re-elected to the same position in 1883. On November 28, -1883, Mr Street had the honour of attaining to the highest civic, position in the city, being elected mayor by a large majority. His opponents on that occasion were Mr John Guthrie and Mr D. M. "Spedding. Jn 1888 Mr Street left for Victoria, whei'e he was engaged in business until about three years ago. He then, however, became afflicted with paralysis, to which, he finally succumbed at the age of 53. The deceased leave.* a widow and a family of three daughters and three sons to mourn their losifc
