Scarcity of water here means scarcity of gold from the alluvials, several 'being unable to work their claims at all. The small pressure of water is insufficient to drive the Morning" Star Pelton wheel at its usual rate. Thp aerial trolly cannot ascend to j thp higher levels, so the men have been tranpi ferred to the lowel levels, which means dead work for si month or so without much gold. Last month tho cake was 160oz, and that from the Golden Site 270z. The Golden Site may yet have a happy tune. before it, although it has had many ups and downs. To ascertain the geological character of the place, with its slips and moves, direction and extent, the different ages and kinds of rock must now be i serioush taken into consideration by the mine manager. ! MELBOURNE, April, 14.— The Mount Lyell Company's retuniF from March 9 to April 5 (inclusive) show that 17,031 tons were treated j fiom the open cuts, assaying — Copper. 3.20 per | cent.; silver, 2.780z; gold, O.lOloz. Fiom the | underground workings 1608 tons were treated, j assaying — Copper, 3.44 per cent. ; silver, |10 58oz: gold, 0.0150z. The converters pioi duced 455 tons of blister copper, containing — Coppei, 450 tons; silver, 4G,2550z ; gold, 17070z. DREDGING RETURNS. Our Cromwell correspondent telegraphs the following returns— Alpine dredge, 540z 15dwt ; i Hartley and Riley, oloz 12dwt. Island Block, is 490z ldwt for six days' dredging Mr P. Proctor, secretary of the Nevis Dredging Company, reports a return of 30oz for 240 hours. The dredge is working splendidly. Mr Jabez Burton reports that the return from the Ettrick dredge is 9oz of gold. The river is in flood. The Dunedin Stock Exchange report the following return for last week: — Otago Dredging Company, 20oz lldwt. The Secretary of the Golden Beach Company reports that the return for last week was 620z 18dwt 12gr gold for 126 hours' dredging. „ The return fromihe Dunedin Gold Dredging Company's dredge' last week was 12oz gold. Tho yield from the Clyde Dredging Company's dredgo for ' last week was lloz. The river is 5 ft" 9in above the normal mark. The New Zealand Gold Dredging Company's dredge Morning Star, situated on the Manuherikia River, next to the' Manorburn dredge, obtained 550z for the four weeks ended Ist April, with broken time, and 38oz 3dwt for the fort■night eliding Saturday. The Hartley and Riley Beach Dredging Company (Limited) washed up on Friday for a return of 51oz of gold for a week's dredging. Mr*R.*T. Wheeler, jun., manager Golden Terraco Dredging Company, reports ' a return of 270z Odwt 7gr for week, tndeel 13lh inst. During the fortnight ending April 8, the Success dredge, Waipori, obtained 450z gold. U ne- Upper Waipori Alluvial Gold Dredging Company (Limited), obtained last week 17oz gold for 131 hours 1 dredging. The Jutland Flat (Waipori) Gold Mining Company (Limited) obtained last week 18oz lldwfc gold for 144 hours'" wages time; 137 hours' actual dredging. .- Mr A. Johnston Brosvn • reports the 'following returns : —Chatto Creek Company, 16oz 9dwt ; j Golden Point Company, 230z sdwt. ■j..ii; Empire Gold Dredging Company obtained 250z Sdwt 20gr gold last week. The regular dividend of Is per share was paid on the 13th inst.' The return for last week from the Success dredge, Waipori, was 28oz 2dwt.
