PROBLEM 1623.

By R. Martins.

GAMES.

TOURNAMENT GAMES.

Championship Tourney Prize Fund.

The above " Fife " ending occurred between Messrs Ferrio (black) and Freedman in the last Scottish" championship tournament, and white drew. Wyllie pointed out that Martin 3 gave the win in Bohn's Handbook.

SEVENTH SCOTTISH TOURNAMENT BOOK. We have received from A. Bryson and Co., Trongate, Glasgow, the book of games of the seventh Scottish draughts championship tournament. The book contains the 136 games of the tourney, exhaustively annotated, with photo engraving of Messrs Freedman (champion) and Campbell (runner-up). As/ may be expected, many of the games contain' the latest developments in the game, and this lias been enhanced in value by the annotation of Messrs J. Lees, G. Buchanan, and Thomas Ballantyne, whose names are siifficient guarantee of quality. The whole work is produced in Bryson and Co.'s well-known first-class style. Of the games and notes the following is a fair sample: — Game 2835—"Maid o' the Mill." Black wins. (a) Wo prefer 2-1 20 at this point. If Black replies 4 8, then 21 17, 10 15 —same as game at twelfth move. (b) 38 22 would give Black a powerful game. (c) This move is a loss. 32 27, as in var. 1, is the correct move at this point. (d) Here Campbell misses the point, and gives .Donar a chance t<? draw. We give a diagram showing the correct play for a win: —

Black to play and win,

(a) Jordan played this against Ferric. Drummond gives 3 7. It is one of those seductive moves which so often prove successful iD tournament play. Its real strength lies in its seeming weakness. Similar moves won many games in the late tourney. It acts as a will-o'-thc-wisp The player with the apparently stronger side is lured to destruction in endeavouring to maintain an apparent, though unreal advantage. (b) Exemplifying our remarks in preceding note. This move is the loser; It. Scobie, playing G. Buchanan, was wrecked upon the same rock. 29 25 is the only move to draw, as in vrj. l below.

The score put up against Mr Jordan in Dunedin is a really good one. Certainly wo must remember that it has been helped considerably fey the scores of visiting players; but Dunedin's share is v^ ry creditable. Altogether 369 games were played, of which the champion "bagged" 280 and lost 8, and 8G were drawn. Mr Jordan has formed a much bettei opinion of the local talent than even these^ scores would indicate, and has expressed an opinion that a team, from here should hold their own with a team of "Victorian players. This, in view of the high standard of the game in Melbourne, is a feather in New Zealand's cap. Tho following.shows some of the best scores recorded against the champion in Dunedin: —

Other players have secured more than one draw, but we do not know how many games they have played. Some of them may even stand higher than several of the above-men-tioned players, s Mr Jordan visits the country districts as follows- — ' • MILTON » April 19 LAWRENCE April 21 BALCLUTHA .. „~ ..
