LEVANTER'S FIRST RACE IN ENGLAND AND NORTON'S LAST.
Particulars are to hand of the race in which Levanter, the Auckland steeplechaser, made hia % debut in England. This, the March Steeplechase at Kempton Park, was a really extraordinary chapter of accidents. Black Lion, who' was first favourite, fell at the very first fence, and Pungent followed his example at the jump after the water. Then Lord Audley came to grief half a mile from home, and brought down The Seer and Mount Dalton, whilst the last fence was fatal to Carriden. Thus six out of the nine runners were placed hors de combat, so that, remarks the Sportsman, there was little merit -attaching to the victory of Sweet Charlotte, and certainly none to the third of Levanter, as the Now Zealand horse must have been tailed off if some of 'the others had stood 'up. The same authority says that Norton, who won the Southdown Steeplechase at Plunfpton takes leave of the turf, his owner having decided to .give his old horso a well-earned rest. Norton, who was bred in New Zealand, haa won 12 races in England.
